Life at the Zoo

Did you know there is Prozac for cats? Ok not literally but there are drugs for cats with “Anxiety Disorders” just like for humans.

How do I know this? I just got back from the vet with my crazy cat. Yesterday we decided enough is enough and took our nocturnal howler to see the doctor. It’s hard for them to tell what is wrong with a cat that seems perfectly healthy but has bad behavior patterns, but from what we described they figure Spencer probably has (and always had) a slight mental problems. In other words he’s a total drama queen. (Thank god I didn’t give birth to him, I can imagine how many times I’d hear “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” jokes)

feli05.jpg They gave us one thing to try called Feliway
which pumps out facial pheromones that are soothing to stressed out cats. They also told us they will be giving us tablets called Clomicalm. It’s a drug that used for dogs to prevent behavioral problems caused by separation anxiety. Apparently it can be used for cats as well, just in smaller doses. I’m kind of nervous about giving him medication like this, but if it works it might be worth it. We really need to start getting some proper sleep and his running around, pacing and incessant meowing is preventing that.

We are also going to work on making a place for the cats to get away from the dog as well. Make a little space for them to go on their own, climb on some things and laze around totally interrupted. I hope with a bit of a change in environment and some of these things the vet is giving us, he might be a bit happier. Then WE will be well happy, well rested pet owners.

Looking back, it probably wasn’t such a good idea getting so many animals. At least not until we have a bigger house. I just love them though and find it hard to control myself when I think of these teeny tiny fluffy things!
