Christmas in the Netherlands

It’s now only 29 (oops – Typo!) 69 days until Christmas and as my latest shopping excursions have shown, the Dutchies have their Christmas items out on the shelves already!

So far we’ve found Christmas items for sale at Blokker and Xenos, and our local Intratuin is currently about 50% through setting up their winter wonderland!  I know this would annoy the crap out of some people, but for Christmas freaks like myself, it just makes me squeal with glee!

My mother is also loving it, she thought she was going back with one empty suitcase after lugging over all my requested back home items, but it looks like it will be going home full of snowmen.

So if you are living in NL and got the itch to do a little shopping for Christmas items, check out Blokker and Xenos.  They have some great sales going on trying to sell off last year’s Christmas items before getting the new stuff out!

My parents also bought us a new x-mas tree!!  Our old one is a fake one but it was cheap and had big gaps and looked really cheesy.  Our new one is BEAUTIFUL!  It looks so much more real and is really full, so I don’t have to buy the pine boughs anymore to fill in all the holes.  Awesome!! I’m so excited.

DECEMBER 1st that sucker is going up!!!

  1. I’m not a big fan of Xmas so the later the better for me. I’m still dealing with Halloween right now…

  2. Whoops, never mind, I found it. You’re in Rotterdam! I’m in Groningen, myself, have you been there yet? It is by far the most beautiful city in the country <3

  3. Hey, out of curiosity, what city are you in? Maybe it’s on here somewhere but I can’t find it. And as a Dutchie who spent some time living in Canada it always warms my heart to knows there’s Canadians nearby *sigh*. When you go back, can you take me with you? ;)

  4. I really get your point about fighting the winter blues with going all out at Christmas. In Thunder Bay, it might have been cold in December, but it was snow-covered and blindingly sunny! Here, the rain makes everything dull…and the understated Christmas celebrations (especially compared to the Sinterklaas one) here are hard to get used to.

  5. That wasn’t a typo it was a Freudian slip. Wishful thinking no less!! ;?P

  8. Went to Lowes a couple of days ago to look at some supplies for the new house and there were aisles and aisles of x-mas stuff on display. It’s not even Halloween!

  9. I don’t know… I have a big issue when I see christmas lights up in the stores and it’s only October!
I may be trying to supress all those bad memories of seeing christmas decorations in the mall when I worked there during college time.

  10. Ahhh, see now that’s a great idea – sell last year’s Christmas stuff THIS year before Christmas, instead of last year after Christmas.

  11. Oooh WOW I am so happy about that! I am also a christmas freak and it can never be to early in my humble opinion to put the decorations out. Dec 1st is my birthday and it’s been a long standing tradition to put the tree up then..Lets post tree pics when we get them up on our blogs!!! I hope you and your parents are having a wonderful time!!

  12. @Melissa – I’ll win you over eventually. Soon you’ll be a x-mas fiend like me. A lot of expat women really get into x-mas because it’s one sure fire way to fight the winter blues here.

@Canucky Woman – haha oops! Wishful thinking there I guess! Thanks for pointing out the typo. :)

  13. *counts days on fingers*

New calendar? 29 days?? I’m so confused!
