My Old Man

Xander at the Beach
Today my crazy husband turned 34 years old.  The other night in bed he threatened to divorce me because for some reason or another I thought he was going to turn 35.  In my defense, he had me up talking for ages and I was so tired my eyes were starting to wobble.

We also realized that we have now known each other for 14 years, have been together for almost 10 years and married for almost 9 years.

Then we laid in bed and pondered how quickly the time has gone by.   Man, when our parents told us how much more quickly time goes by as you get older, they weren’t kidding.   I’m frightened to think of what other things they’ve said that might be true.

Anyhow, back to my aging husband.   Thankfully we don’t do the surprise gifts thing.   We tried that last Christmas and he didn’t use a single thing I got him, EVEN THOUGH they were truly awesome gifts that I put a lot of thought into.

Since then we’ve gone back to the tried and true “Whattya want?!” method where I ask what he wants, he tells me, my eyes glaze over and he goes and orders it for himself.  It goes generally the same on my birthday, and it works for us, although my birthday requires a narrowing-it-down process because I always want tons of shit.

Not that my husband doesn’t.  For his birthday this year he got almost €300 worth of electronics (he’s a robotics nerd).  Somehow we skipped the narrowing-it-down thing and he just went hogwild.

His birthday requests were the electronics (which he couldn’t wait for and ordered weeks ago), a pork roast for dinner (done) and a movie (done).  Easy to please or what!  I usually include some sort of massage and getting out of something I don’t want to do around the house in my requests.  I love that he can’t say no to me on my birthday.

It still blows my mind when I think of how we met and all the shit we’ve gone through together since then, that here I am celebrating his 34th birthday with him!

There’s nowhere in the world I’d rather be, not even Canada!

  4. Happy birthday to him! 34, that’s a good age – thirties are good years I think! And nine years married, that’s fantastic! Nice to hear you’re happy where you are and who you’re with. :)
