Only in the Netherlands!

Breigh April 5, 2009 16

A while back I blogged about some funny Dutch TV ads, and every time I’ve seen the above ad I’ve meant to put it on here as well but kept forgetting.

I just saw this at 7pm on a Sunday evening while sitting and watching some TV after dinner.   Even after living here almost 10 years I still can’t help but laugh at how different TV is here when it comes to censorship.  Canada and the US are censored to hell and back, and here in NL there seems to be none at all.

I like it better here.

this is the first time you saw this? OMG I’ve seen it so many times! The only problem is that when it does come on, the kids are in the room and I usually have to find the remote pretty damn quick!

Melissas last blog post… Stupidity… unfortunately this is just across the Canadian border.

I’ve already made a complaint about it. It’s ridiculous that this is shown before 9pm.

Yeah, but Danielle, it’s not a Dutch swear so they don’t care.

My best friend’s mum was this little old Italian lady who used to use the f-word all the time because she just thought it was a great word…to her, it wasn’t swearing!

That’s true… I hear cartoon characters saying shit and bitch all the time in the kids’ shows here. Maybe I should call some ad makers’ houses and tell their kids words like kutwijf and kankerhoer and see how they like it.

I don’t have kids so I don’t really mind. haha I think it’s kind of funny actually. Not sure how I’d react if I did have kids, although I’m pretty sure kids nowadays hear all that stuff in their day to day life anyway.

I think it’s a fair point that the Dutch don’t take English swear words as seriously. Most of the Dutch kids who are too young to hear it don’t really get what it means or the severity of it.

DutchBitch – I haven’t seen that ad before haha Hilarious!

Ah, but Danielle, they’d only say that you’re in the Netherlands now and to “suck it up, buttercup” (ie, the definition of “inbugger” according to CW’s Dutch-English dictionary). ;-D

They might hear it in daily life, but it doesn’t need to be out of the mouths of cartoon characters or during a time when it should be “safe” for children to watch TV. I don’t object to the commercial itself, but I do object to it being in my kids’ faces while we’re trying to watch a family show together. There is nothing wrong with having it aired after 9pm.

It’s just one more way that children are not being taught decency and respect, if this is the kind of language they’re being allowed to use. I don’t care what language it’s in. Whether it’s English, Dutch, Spanish, Tagalog, whatever, it’s not appropriate.

I don’t mean to sound so rabid about it, but I’m tired of kids being bombarded with this kind of crap. There’s a difference between kids hearing a swear word from other kids and them hearing it from TV. When another kid says it, they know it’s not right. But TV lends some credibility, and makes it seem ok to do.

I just about shit my pants….that is fucking great! I have 3 young kids and in all honesty I curse around them but let them know it isnt proper. If the TV is parenting your children then I think its time you got get rid of your tv.
