HITLERGOLF!!!

HITTEGOLF – When I first saw this word today the first thing that came to mind was Hitler, don’t ask me why. I’d probably have the same reaction if I heard Hitler was coming to the Netherlands next week though. So I’ve decided to create another Canadutch word (along with Hubbetje and the like) and call this Hitlergolf.

Xander sent me a message this morning on MSN:

Blasphemer says:
http://www.nu.nl/news/750071/74/Hittegolf_verwacht_in_Nederland.html
Breigh says:
what’s a hittegolf?

I went to the link to read the article and as I read through it, the meaning of hittegolf became more and more clear. While I didn’t understand what that particular word meant, I understood almost everything else in the article.

Breigh says:
it doesn’t mean what I think it means does it
Blasphemer says:
what do you think it means?
Breigh says:
heatwave
Blasphemer says:
you’re correct!!! *DING DING*
Breigh says:
fuck
Breigh says:
it’s going to be above 30?
Blasphemer says:
yeah
Blasphemer says:
that’s what a heatwave is, 3 days with temps over 30C
Breigh says:
double fuck

You see, in the Netherlands it doesn’t just get hot when it gets hot, but it gets humid too. When I say humid I don’t just mean humid, I mean you can see the air hanging in front of you, blink and you break into a sweat, everything is sticky humid… and that’s something this fat little Canadian girl doesn’t like.

While my parents were here I went and got a haircut. Over the last year or so I’ve slowly been working my way to shorter hair, going from bum length, to just above my waist, halfway down my back and now finally, shoulder length. I got the haircut last month because I wanted to save myself the aggrivation of having this blanket of hair all summer, which has never helped with the above mentioned heat and humidity. (If only it were that easy to remove the fat too, bleh!)

Now that it’s getting warmer I realized it really hasn’t made that much difference. While my hair isn’t all down my back it’s still all on my neck and making me want it in a ponytail all the time. So why not just have it properly short? I’ll tell you why, or at least why I haven’t had short hair since I was a teenager… because in my insanity I’ve always felt weird about cutting my hair short since being here in NL and gaining all this extra weight. I’m worried that I’ll end up looking like one of those people in Beetle Juice, ya know? A great big body and this teeeeeny tiny little head!!!

Now, in light of the upcoming Hitlergolf, I officially don’t care.

Breigh says:
I’m so cutting the rest of my hair off
Breigh says:
we need to prepare
Blasphemer says:
at least 3 days and at least 30C
Breigh says:
get the fan out
Blasphemer says:
hahahaha
Breigh says:
get the screen door for the kitchen door so we can leave it open at night
Breigh says:
make icecubes
Blasphemer says:
“we need to prepare” you make it sound like we’ve got a nuclear war coming
Breigh says:
we might, if we don’t prepare
Blasphemer says:
hahahahahaha
Blasphemer says:
pff, not like you’ll have the energy to run fter me anyway
Blasphemer says:
not at 30C
Breigh says:
Tripple fuck
Blasphemer says:
where did the 3rd fuck come from?
Breigh says:
realizing that there’s no way in hell I’d catch you

So I’ve decided, I’m going to cut my hair short and risk the Beetle Juice look. Shit, I’ll even tolerate looking like a raging lesbian, if that’s how it turns out (don’t ask me why, big women with really short hair always look like lesbians to me, I’m going to hell). I will keep you posted on the outcome of that, with pics even … if I don’t totally hate it, I mean.

Now on to other news:

WOOOOOOT!!! Xander passed his driving exam!!

I’m so happy I could pee myself!! I’m so proud of him!!!

One of the worst things for me here in NL has been not having access to a car and soon we will HAVE ONE!!!!!!!!! FREEEEEEEEDOMMMMMM!!!!!

I learned to drive when I was 16 and have always loved driving. There is nothing more theraputic than a nice drive, windows down, music on, singing badly and knowing nobody can hear you anyway. *sigh* Damn, do I miss that… Xander has never really missed it because he’s never had it. All his life he’s lived places where he could get anywhere he wanted to go by public transit so he doesn’t really get how different life can be when you have one. Hopefully within the next 2 months or so he’ll know!

I will take a few lessons and get my license as well once we have a car. My Canadian DL has long since expired and wasn’t valid to drive here in NL anyway, so I have to do all that stuff the Dutch have to do in order to get their license. Silly (and expensive!!) if you ask me… after driving for almost 15 years.

No more carrying groceries all the way home..
No more ridiculous delivery fees when buying something too big to take on a bus…
No more hot, stinky train rides to and from the beach…
No more only seeing where public transit can take me…

Finally, we will have indepenence and freedom … I CAN’T WAIT!!!!

One (Last?) Visit to Keukenhof

This weekend Xander and I decided to visit Keukenhof. We both really wanted to make …

  1. I don’t even know how to work RSS feeds, THAT is a handicap! haha

  2. I haven’t, I’m just altogether too dependent on reading blogs through an RSS feed. It’s a handicap :)

  3. I was wondering where you’ve been Gail, I thought you forgot about me! hehe

  4. By the way, if that’s a heatwave, Toronto had one and my car broke down in it.

  5. Dammit, look how much I missed!

When you first set up your site on WP, there was no RSS feed. Being all lazy, I didn’t think to actually check back for one! Now that you have one, I won’t miss a thing!

CONGRATS to Xander for finally getting his license. I know exactly what this means for you, and how much of a difference it will make to your life there. It’s a big deal, even if you just want to rent a car and take an impromptu trip.

  6. Weeeeee!! I’m so glad you’re going to make your own top 10 list! I love seeing what other people’s favs. are!

As for the pictures, I kind of just choose from my favs. of the particular actor. I’ve discovered I have lotssss and lotsss of pictures on my comp. saved from just random sites. (So much so, in fact, it’s hard picking one fav. I might do more picspams of just men pretty soon to share the goodness XD) But the best direction I can point you in is the LJ community HiRes Hunks. You’ll have to join the comm. to view the entries (takes just a second) and have an LJ account if you don’t already (all free) but it’s full of eye candy XD High quality pictures of all the best actors. (scan through the memories to find collections of a specific actor by name)

Hope that helps! I can’t wait to see yours!! *hugs* :D

  7. HK gets sticky ugly humid in summer as well. I too am debating a close shave…

  8. Yeah Melissa it was the same for me in Cape Breton :) How I took it for granted when I used to come home from work and just hop in the car and take off to the beach for a quick swim hehe

  9. I so feel for you. I have been there done that and would not like to do it again. I HATE hot weather, I like to be able to breathe. Have no worries about that here in NF though. lol

  10. Yeah you’re right, maybe I’ll just SHAVE my head!! Won’t get much cooler than that. In the temperature way I mean, not in the people will think I look awesome way.

  11. UGH I can’t imagine that humid weather! My brother got stuck in it here in the states at one time, too, and he told me: you know there’s something wrong when it’s so humid you can chew the air. EW! *dies*
I hope you survive your Hitlergolf!! (lysdexia is an epidemic.)

GO YOU! :D Why not cut your hair? If you don’t like it, it just grows back! LMAO Beetlejuice… I have the sudden urge to watch that now XD

  12. Of course and AUSTRALIAN wouldn’t mind the heat here in NL, you guys practively live ON the sun but I’m Canadian remember? :P Not that it doesn’t get hot in Canada, but like with everything else, North America is all about convenience. If I had a pool right outside my door and central air in my apartment (like I did in Toronto), I wouldn’t be complaining :P

For me it’s 1/3 weight (which is my own fault I know, but it’s not going to change within the next week) 1/3 humidity and 1/3 lack of easy acess to relief (no car, no airco, pain in the ass getting public transit to the beach) that makes the heat here so difficult and unbearable for me.

  13. It is *so* not very humid in NL in summertime. Maybe it is to someone who grew up in the Arctic circle, but compared to other parts of the world it is almost dry.

regarding hittegolf, I was always told that a heatwave was 5 consecutive days over 25, of which 2 are over 30. 3 consecutive days over 30 is called “tropical weather”. I went to the beach (Zandvoort aan Zee) last year and was stuck in Haarlem for 5 hours because they shut the trains down when it gets over 30. We ended up getting a special bus back to Amsterdam.

In Sydney, a heatwave is when it is over 40 for a few days. On 1 January this year it was 49C. Luckily I didn’t have to suffer that because I was enjoying the nice -3C in A’dam.
