Sometimes I Really Love Rotterdam

Schouwbergplein

Last night on our way to the Film Festival I had to stop and just look at this for a moment.  It’s the square at Schouwburgplein in Rotterdam.  The photo doesn’t do it justice, but there were so many twinkling lights and on a cold winter night it looked really beautiful.

The red things that look like cranes actually have big spotlights on the end, and you can control them using a panel in the middle at the bottom.

For all the times I get frustrated living here or think of how much I’d love to move out of the city, there are times like this where I see something and sigh happily.  I am so lucky to be able to see places like this.  Places I never dreamed I’d ever be as a young girl in a small town in eastern Canada.  Sometimes I really do love Rotterdam with my whole heart.  This was one of those moments.

  1. Oh, isn’t that lovely! I’ve only been to Rotterdam once (to see one of the museums), but it is an interesting looking city. And I agree–it’s good to have these pretty little scenes to remind us not to take things for granted ;-)

    Groetjes from Den Haag!

  2. Beautiful photo Tammy! I never thought I would have those feeling for Brussels either but sometimes it just hits me how lucky I am to live here. I haven’t spent much time in Rotterdam but I think I need to. Interested in being a tour guide some day?

    • Sure Alison, would give us a good excuse to meet up! :) Not sure how GOOD a tour guide I’d be, mind you… but I’d give it a go!

  3. Lovely pic..I always feel tempted to just hang around the Schouwburgplein square when ever we are in the Centraal and true, in the lights it becomes all the more beautiful. We are planning to attend the Film festival too, I guess I am just being choosy about the film I want to watch there :)

  5. I get the opposite effect as you. I grew up in a fairly big city but close to Toronto where everything was big and lighted up. Now I live in a small city. Sometimes I really do miss the big lights and big buildings.
Beautiful picture, thank you for sharing!

    • I lived in/near Toronto for a while before I moved here. First I lived in Whitby and then moved to North York where I was until I left for NL. That was a huge change for me after leaving Cape Breton (and PEI where I lived in Between). Size-wise Rotterdam doesn’t compare to Toronto, but it’s a different kind of city as well. I miss Toronto sometimes…
