Saturday Photo Hunt – Fresh

Urban Garden

This week’s photo hunt theme is Fresh, which luckily fell in line with what I wanted to write about today.  Fresh food!  My very own future home-grown fresh off the balcony veggies! OMG!

This week I got a package from Jenny (my stepmom-in-law) with these three packages of seeds included.  She sent along a little card explaining that while she was ordering seeds for her garden she noticed that they had an urban collection and thought of me!  These veggies can be grown in pots on your balcony, which gives you the ability to grow some of your own veggies without the need for a lot of space or your own garden.  Pretty cool, huh?

I’ve never grown veggies before and I’m pretty notorious for killing almost every plant I’ve ever owned (except the one behind the seeds in this photo, still alive since October 2008!), but I’m totally going to give this a go.  I’d be thrilled to death to eat a salad which includes veggies I grew all on my own.  Plus, the growth would make for some pretty cool blogging material.  I think I’ll call it Project Veggie!  It’s a great summer project and will be a true test of my not-so-green thumbs.

Now, I just have to spend some time googling what the instructions mean, like ‘sow’, which I thought was the action of planting them, but apparently I need to sow them a number of times?  I will, of course… as soon as I figure out what sowing means!

Thanks Jenny!!

  1. Remember you reap what you sow, sow have fun and get busy.Certainly a FRESH look at this week’s theme. If you want to get FRESH with me this week check mine here.

  2. Good luck on your new project. I did herbs on my balcony in Spain and they did great. I have thought about getting one going here in Oz, but we are on the road so much the plants would die from a lack of water.

  5. I did peppers last year in a container and they did great. Unfortunately I got adventurous with the variety (think purple, white and sunburst peppers) and they didn’t taste so great. So this year I am doing just plain peppers and see what I get.

Thanks for sharing these… I’m thinking of getting the cucumbers.

  6. Good luck with your urban garden project! What a neat idea! :)

  8. Let me know how that goes! I only have a balcony too and have no idea what kinds of plants to put in there, but veggies sound cool too!
Do you have any tips for regular plants that can survive in a pot on the balcony?
