Turtle Update

After the first Bunker dieing, and losing the second Bunker such a short while later, I was quite unsure what I wanted to do with the new tank we had previously ordered.

We had a new baby turtle that we’d bought to keep the second Bunker company after the death of the first one. We named him Frick! (with !) and he was left all alone after the second Bunker passed away on us.

In the end we decided to give it another try. I love turtles and while I feel bad that we lost the first pair.. now we know what to do and how to make sure they have the best environment possible.

Things we have now that we didn’t have before:

  • Better knowledge of their diet and nutritional needs.
  • A UV light with UVA / UVB for vitamin D3, etc
  • A nice basking area with a heat lamp
  • Large river rocks instead of gravel (turtles eat gravel, it’s not good for them)

Here are some photos of the new setup! (The water is still somewhat foggy in the photo, this takes a while to clear)

We got Frick! a new little friend as well, at the moment we are letting him get acquainted with Frick! and get used to his new home. When I can I’ll get some photos of him and introduce him as well.

  1. Wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwoooooooooooooooooooooooooowwww! That looks reaaaaaallly cool!

  2. Every time I see a set-up like this, it makes me long for a huge super-cool fish tank.

I used to have one. However, after a year of random fish death and having to continually use the fish-tank vacuum to suck the fish poop out of the tank, I pretty well learned my lesson and got rid of the thing (fobbed it off on some other unsuspecting fool who thought keeping animals in a cool glass tank would be fun).

Now, I wouldn’t have another tank unless it came along with Juan Carlos, the incredibly handsome tank-cleaning boy, to come over and take care of the thing for me.

  3. You’ll probably think I’m weird (and you’re probably right), but I had a dream about Frick last night Breigh — he was busy swimming, swimming, swimming, then he climbed up under his heat lamp and watched tv basking in the light of his warm new home — he’s quite photogenic shug — thanks for sharing him

    huggin’ you

  5. In most civilised countries around the world, there are organisations which would prosecute you for killing your “turtles” by not providing them with their staple requirements to live.

    This is animal cruelty.

If you are going to kill your pets, at least do it humanely by using them as baseballs or something. Slow, lingering deaths are so tiresome compared with the fun you can have.

  6. Salmonella? You’re supposed to cook them very well before you eat them.

  7. I remember demanding a turtle form my mum and dad years ago when I was a little tyke. They went out and were all ready to hand over the $$s, but then the stores told us pet turtles had been taken off the Canadian market due to salmonella.

  8. Awesome! Maybe I need a turtle…

  9. OMG!!!! Frick! is so cute and love the new tank.

  10. That is seriously the best! name! ever!

  11. Hmm I’ll have to talk to Meesh now and think about getting a turtle. We’ve been talking about it, and never got around to it.
