The Veggie Files – Signs of Life!

A while back I got a package in the mail from Xander’s step-mother which included seeds for growing cucumber, lettuce and beans.  Not just any old kind, but the urban kind for people like me without gardens, they can be grown on the balcony!  By gardening idiots like me!

Last week I dug out some pots and got my hands dirty on the balcony.  I probably should have gotten photos of that if I wanted to document the entire process and prove that it was actually me that did it, but you’ll have to take my word for it.  I planted some of the lettuce and all of the beans and cucumber seeds, then I sat the pots in my dining room window.  I assumed I had a week or two before I’d see any results, which already irritated me.  I have about as much patience as a four year old.

I was shocked and amazed few days later in the afternoon when Xander called me into the dining room, telling me that my seeds were sprouting.  I had just watered them that morning and saw nothing, and a few hours later I had all these plants peeking through!

This is what I have after two days.

Bean Plants Sprouting

The beans are spouting like magic beans. I’m pretty sure I’m going to be able to climb these stalks in a few days and spy on my neighbours!

Cucumber Plants Sprouting

All four of the cucumber seeds I planted have sprouted as well!  They are not quite as impressive looking as my bean stalks but I think that might turn around later once we start seeing actual cucumbers.

Then there’s this…

Waiting On The Lettuce

My lettuce.  Not a sprout to be found. Zilch, Nada!  I assume it’s because the seeds are like, microscopic and it’s going to take a while.  Just in case I planted a few more a little more shallow to see if they come up quicker, perhaps I put them a little too deep.  I am mentally tapping my foot at this pot!

I guess it won’t be long before I have to replant the plants that are growing so that they have more room.  That will be an entirely different adventure.

One thing though… I was so chuffed with myself when I saw the sprouts coming through, I forgot that I actually have to keep them alive!

Shit…

    • I saw strawberry plants at the AH the other day, I was SO tempted to get one. SO SO tempted. I figured I should wait and make sure I have room for what I have once it’s all separated before I get anything else.

  4. I can’t wait to see them fully grown either!

    • Well, if you remember to remind me to water them we might both get to see them fully grown, otherwise I can’t make any promises!
