Happy Waiter

Last night we went out for dinner at the Dream Cafe (formerly known as the American Dream Cafe) here in Rotterdam.

It was a gathering for a group I belong to for expat women.   We had a reservation for 6:30pm but when we got there they didn’t have the reservation, eek!

Luckily, Happy Waiter was working and he gave us tables that were set up for another group that was supposed to come at 7:30.  I call him Happy Waiter because he is there almost every time we go there and he’s always super happy and friendly.   I think I love him…  It’s so rare here in NL that you get service like he gives that I can’t help but just totally adore him.

He’s become well known among my little circle of friends, as my love for him has as well.   Thankfully Xander is very secure and didn’t mind me gushing on last night about how crazy I am about this guy.

I was teased mercilessly because I get the same meal every time I go there… potato skins and a small chicken ceaser salad.   Hey, I like to stick with what I know I like, it works for me.   I caved though and thought I’d try something new.  So I ordered their DREAM burger which was described as a 100% beef patty with cheese and hot cajun sauce.  Ok, that sounds good!

Here’s the problem… a problem I have with many restaurants.  When we read a menu, we assume that what we read and what we order is what we are gonna get.

When my burger arrived the first thing I noticed as the plate was passed under my nose was a huge waft of onions.

Oh fuck.   I hate onions on a burger.

When I examined my plate when it landed, I saw that under the cheese (which was on the menu) was a load of onions.  Under the meat (which was on the menu) was pickles, lettuce, and tomato all slathered in this cajun sauce.

By the time I picked the bits of onion out from the melted cheese and shoo’d all that veggie crap off.  The sauce was gone and I basically had meat and cheese between a slightly mangled bun. MMMMM!

My plate was a mess and inside I was wishing I’d not caved under the pressure to show a lust for variety and just gotten what I knew I’d like and enjoy.

In true Breigh fashion, I blame my husband and friends for taunting me… rather than my own stupidity.   I am a blame shifter.

Anyhow, the night was really enjoyable.  I got to meet some of the other expat girls I’ve been chatting with online but not met yet and made a few plans for some smaller get togethers throughout the coming weeks.

Oh, and some small diet triumphs from last night:

  • For the first time in ages I sat in that place between the table and the wall.   Which was a place I’ve always avoided for fear of it being too tight a squeeze.
  • I managed to stick to my guns and have no desert while surrounded by the oohing and aaahing of the chocolate brownie and cheesecake eaters around me.

Still holding steady at 28 lbs lost and trying to make the push to 30!
