Where Were You 10 Years Ago?

I was in Cape Breton, writing in my diary.. and letters to my future husband, even though I didn’t know it yet.

Today while rummaging through our storage room, Xander found my old diary. When he brought it up to me I couldn’t believe my eyes, as I haven’t seen it in ages. I have been looking through it and there are so many things that make me groan. Some things I was complaining about then and am still complaining about, other things that seemed like the end of the world then sound so ridiculous now.

Tucked inside the diary were two of the letters I sent to Xander ten years ago. We have all the letters we sent to each other back then, but like my diary I haven’t seen them in a while. Hard to believe it was so long ago that he and I were writing letters and post cards to each other, when the internet was so new. I miss writing letters, I used to love buying pretty stationary.

Also in the diary was a page where I wrote the following:

Things I Want to do Before I Die
(In No Specific Order)
(Yes, I actually wrote that in brackets in my diary)
  • Ride an Elephant (2005 Update: Still on the list!)
  • Go to Disneyworld (2005 Update: Still on the list!)
  • Meet Xander (2005 Update: DONE!)
  • See Ireland (2005 Update: DONE!)
  • Meet a man I think the sun rises and sets with (2005 Update: DONE!)
  • Have a winter wedding with Cape with fur edges, horse and sleigh just like on Days of Our Lives (2005 Update: Uhh, no.)
  • Lose weight (2005 Update: *Groan*)
  • Turn down a really hot guy for a date, just to see his reaction (2005 Update: haha oh jeez, DONE!)
  • Go out with B.M. (2005 Update: DONE!)
  • Have unbelievable sex like everyone else says they have (2005 Update: Bwahaha I never should have read my father’s Penthouse Letters!)
  • Sky-Dive (2005 Update: Maybe someday but not counting on it)
  • Fly in a plane (2005 Update: Done, done and done again.. bleh.)
  • Go on a cruise (2005 Update: Soooo still on the list!)
  • Figure out what the hell I want to do with my life (2005 Update: *Sigh* 10 years later and I still don’t know)
  • Send my parents someplace really nice (2005 Update: Not yet)
  • Get another puppy (2005 Update: DONE!)
  • Ride a jet ski (2005 Update: DONE!)
  • Get in my car and go wherever I end up (2005 Update: Still on the list)
  • Go on an African Safari (2005 Update: Still on the list)

So maybe not the most ambitious for a 19 year old girl. When I look at it I realize there is nothing in there about a career, family or any of the really imporant stuff. In comparison things like “Get another puppy” and “Ride a jet-ski” don’t really hold up. What can I say though, that’s just who I was (am?). I’m happy to see that I’ve at least accomplished some of the things I wanted to get done in my life. I certainly had no idea when I was writing “Meet Xander” that he would end up being the “.. man I think the sun rises and sets with”. Life is strange… I think I want to add a few things…

More Things I Want to Do Before I Die
(In No Specific Order)
  • Become a mother
  • Become fluent in Dutch
  • Go to Egypt, Australia, Scotland and China
  • Get my Dutch drivers license
  • Own a ranch
  • Move back to Canada
  • Have a career
  • Scuba Dive
  • Meet Andrea
  • Learn to knit
  • Take a photography course
  • Do something truly memorable
  • See something I write in print, like in a magazine or book
  • That’s all I can really think of at the moment… hopefully I’ll have a few (2015 Update: DONE!) when the time comes.

  1. I found my old stuff this past summer as well. Jaysus…I was insanely boy crazy! :)

I KNOW I never thought I would be living in Hong Kong, dating a guy from Australia and travelling once every 4 months. I can’t say I am sorry how my life turned out, but if someone had told me this 10 years ago, I would have laughed my head off.

    I should make a list…see what I can accomplish.

  2. 10 years ago at this time I had just returned to Canada after leaving in 1991. I was broke, umemployed, and started a six-month program at a tourism school on a small student loan. I didn’t know anyone, was living in the ‘burbs. HELL, basically! I spent the next 9 years establishing myself, learning new skills, meeting new people, making enough money to travel again, going back to school. If anyone said I’d be living in small-town USA, I’d mock them! (Good thing nobody said that, I’d be eating my words!)

I don’t know if I’m any closer to accomplishing a list of things to do before I die, but maybe making a list would help.
