I Love This City

Over the past few years I’ve really grown to appreciate the city I live in.   I think I’m becoming a hardcore Rotterdammer at heart.   I can understand why tourists prefer Amsterdam, as it still has more of that historical Dutch look but Rotterdam has some of that too, but with something really cool and modern mixed in.

Rotterdam From the 17th Floor

I took these photos from the livingroom window of my managers 17th floor flat in downtown Rotterdam.   What an amazing view she has!  I can’t imagine the amount of photos I’d be taking if I had that kind of view, especially on New Years Eve!

One really cool thing that I love here is the KPN Building by the Erasmus Bridge (the white bridge in the background).   Each window has a small green light in front of it and they use them to make pictures day and night.  When I am switching trams to go to and from work I watch it all the time.   I found a video on YouTube of the intersection where I wait, it shows the building in action.   The video is sped up slightly, so don’t think I live in some crazyassed place where everyone drives like maniacs.  Oh wait, yeah actually I do.. it’s just not as bad as in the video :P

How cool is that!  They even have that dancing baby, remember the one that Ally McBeal kept seeing?   I love that haha

Gotta love the chipmunk speak at the end.  I wish they’d just left it real time so you can see how it looks for real but I guess they wanted to keep the file size down or something.

So if you are ever in the Netherlands, remember… there’s more to see than just Amsterdam!

  1. It looks wonderful!

  2. My Dutchie would totally agree with you. He thinks of Amsterdam the way we Canuckies think of Toronto: “Oh shut up already, you’re not the ONLY city in the country.”

I think he also admires that it’s thrived despite its centre being almost totally decimated during the war.

(That his family is also hard-core Feyenoord fans might also have something to do with his attitude!)

  3. I actually love Rotterdam. Amsterdam is a great city but you’re right, there is so much more to the NL. I’m moving to the NL in June so I’ll be glad to get out and about and start discovering even more of everything that’s packed into such a tiny country! Great pictures!

  4. that is totally cool. someday when I’m rich I’ll be able to travel the world, and i know that Europe will probably be on the top of my list. So cool.
