Let it Snow!

snow27dec2014.jpg

We got snow this morning in the Netherlands. So close to Christmas, but it just missed the mark.  I think not having snow is one of the things that makes it more difficult to get into the Christmas spirit over here.  Well, that together with not having friends and family around. It was so nice to wake up and see this snow this morning, though!   The great thing about when it snows here is that it last just long enough for you to go “aawww it’s SNOWING!!” and spend a day outside listening to it crunching under your boots and ... Omg! We’re Moving … Eventually!

moving.jpg

I’ve been meaning to write this post since we got back from holiday, so here it is – We’re moving to Pittsburgh! Wow, I don’t even know where to start!  It’s such a huge thing over here in Casa Soldaat, this impending move.  It’s been in the making for quite some time and while it still doesn’t feel quite real yet, it’s actually happening!  I’m not sure when, that is all down to US immigration, but it is happening.  Holy crap! Let’s start at the beginning.  It all started a few years ago when my husband got involved in robotics.  ... Read More »

Putting Project Baby to Bed

76fb_thumb.jpg

See what I did there?  Putting baby to bed… Anyway, yes, this is the post.  That post that we all thought would possibly come someday where I talk about us reaching the end of the road with trying to have children.  Well, here we are at the end of the road.  I probably shouldn’t say it like that, it’s not as though we’ve walked down this road that ends at a cliff where our lives come to an end.  Rather, we’ve come to an intersection where this road ends and it’s time for us to turn in another direction.  Who ... The Big 2013 Update

2013

Whew, it’s been a while.  Every time I post I talk about how I’m going to update more often but then I fall right back into the habit of doing everything via Facebook.  Aaah, Facebook!  What a love/hate relationship I have with that site.  It keeps me in touch but is also one of the biggest sources of aggravation for me.  It’s also killing my blog!  Only because I let it, of course, but still… So, I think my last post was in May or something.  That seems like forever ago, what a year this has been.  I’ll try to ... 101 List – My Birthday Surprise

birthdayfeat

Settle in, this is going to be a long one… About two months ago my friend Penny told me her husband was going away for a weekend in May, she was unloading her son with her sister-in-law and asked if I wanted to have a girl’s day.  I’m always up for a girl’s day so I promptly marked it on the calendar. Fast forward to this past Saturday morning.  The plan was that Penny was going to come here before lunch, we’d go meet her friend at a restaurant in town so that she could give her the cupcakes she ... Where Have You Been?!

river5

So I’ve been getting a few mails asking where the heck I am and why I haven’t been at least doing my monthly updates.  Well, I’m still alive and everything is great… so please don’t worry!   I’ve just been incredibly busy! Doing what?  Well… In September my husband and I went to the south of France where we spent time with his family and did a lot of this: Also a whole lot of this: Yeah, it was heaven! After returning from almost three weeks there, my husband left the next day for five days in Denmark, during which time ... Read More »

How The Dutch Got Their Bicycle Paths

bikefeat5

[youtube id=”XuBdf9jYj7o” width=”600″ height=”350″] A friend shared this on Facebook yesterday and I found it so interesting.  I had no idea there was such a history behind how we got our bicycle paths.  I think it’s wonderful that there are so many biking paths in the country and that cyclists can travel safely.  Something that is sorely missing in Canada, much to the dismay of some of my cycling friends back there. It’s amazing that a country that is so small and has so little space can figure this out and put it into action but a huge country with ... Read More »

Dragonfly Photobomb

dragonflyfeat

This morning I was sitting on our front balcony having my coffee and decided to take a photo of the beautiful sky for Instagram (You can find me here on Statigram). It was only after I had uploaded the photo that I realized it was photobombed by a passing dragonfly. I love weird little coincidences like that. Read More »

Adventures in Geocaching: Green & Park Rotterdam

parkgreenfeat

Back in May Xander and I went geocaching for the second time, and I totally forgot to write about it!   It wasn’t long after our first geocaching adventure, and it looked like quite a fun one to do.  We were going to see a film that morning and decided that since this particular cache was in one of the parking areas in the city center, that we’d park there, walk to the theater and then do the cache before hopping in the car to go home. What I really liked about the cache was that you were supposed to be ... Read More »

Holiday Biking

may2012.jpg

Today is a holiday in the Netherlands so I have my honey home with me.  The weather has been beautiful so we decided to take advantage and go for a bike ride. We packed a lunch, grabbed an old duvet cover (mental note: buy picnic blanket!) and head off.  We biked through Zuiderpark, where I almost died with envy for the people who had the little boat with the umbrella out in the middle of the water.  Then back up around to some other areas with small man made beaches.  It’s really amazing where people will swim.  Most of the ... Our First Geocaching Adventure!

geofeat

Yesterday morning I was talking to Merijn my brother in law on Facebook and he gave us a really great tip on how to keep our walks and bike rides interesting – geocaching!!  I’ve never done it before but I always hear about people doing it and how much fun it is.  He helped me figure out how to use the website and the application for my phone and together we found one that was 2.5 kms away from our house and looked interesting. Then I told Xander about it and he was all for it!  We got dressed, grabbed ... Read More »
