To a child’s ear, ‘mother’ is magic in any language - A. Benedict
If you’ve ever met my mother you’d understand why I may find it hard to explain why I love her so much. I know everyone loves their mom and perhaps I’m biased but in my eyes she’s head and shoulders above all others.
She is my best friend.
I’ve tried to think back and come up with times when she has really shown me she loves me, so that everyone reading this can understand just what kind of woman she is. The problem is.. it’s been constant from the minute I was born. For as long as I’ve been alive, I have been loved utterly and completely by my mother. I can’t give examples of when she’s really shown it, because then I’d have to tell you about every single day for the past 29 years. I have never ever felt like she wasn’t really showing me.. because that’s all she’s ever done.
I can, however, tell you about her.
She is not only loving but she is giving, kind, trustworthy, warm, thoughtful and strong. To meet her, is to love her. She is one of those people who never wants to rock the boat, always keeps the peace and spends her entire life making sure the people SHE loves are happy. To get her to think of her own happiness, for example to buy something for herself or splurge on herself for something.. is a struggle. She always puts others first and if they are happy, she is happy. I’ve never met anyone so selfless.
She is funny without meaning to be. She says things like "If you pull that belt any tighter, you’ll look like a snowman!".. and makes me burst out laughing and unable to stop. She’s great at cutting up my father in front of people, which he absolutely loves because he’s a joker and loves that she plays along. She’s a complete neat freak and keeps a house so tidy you could eat off the floors and drink out of the toilet. If you put a glass down and there is less than a few sips left, she assumes you’re done and is gone with it to the kitchen. You’ll still be chewing your last bite of food and she’ll be giving you an inventory of all that is left on the table that you can still eat. If you put laundry in the washer, she will stealth down to the basement and put them in the dyrer for you when it’s time. She loves soap operas, reality TV and used to love baseball until they went on strike and ruined the day she had planned to see the Jays in Toronto.
What I also love about her is that even though she is so soft and kind, she’s also strong and determined. She works hard and she has more willpower than anyone I’ve ever met. Regardless of how badly she wants something, she never lets it get in the way of what has to be done. I think I’ve seen how strong she can really be in the last two years or so. Two years ago my father had a massive heart attack, she spent every minute she was awake in the hospital with him. He had bypass surgery and was also diagnosed as being diabetic. She took care of him and put up with him (no easy task when he’s sick, trust me!) and not once did I hear a complaint. No matter how tired she was, how scared she was.. it never showed. In fact, she’s also a big sneak and a liar! When she called me to tell me about the heart attack she told me it was a mild one, that he had "just a bit of discomfort". It wasn’t until my father was able to talk to me on the phone that I found out it was a massive heart attack. She didn’t want to worry me, or upset me.. that’s just what she’s like. She’ll take on the world if it means making it easy for the rest of us.. How can you be angry with someone for lying to you when they do it with so much love?
I envy her for her willpower. After my father’s heart attack, she decided she was going to get in shape and change her lifestyle. Since then she has lost approximately 80 pounds! She looks amazing and you can tell she feels amazing. She has more willpower in her little finger than I have in my entire body I think.. I’m so proud of her!
My father said to me one day "Your mother has the makings of a saint, she is everything good a person can be."
I can’t explain her any better than that.
